Why “Bexar”?

The name of our firm was chosen in deference to the company’s roots in Bexar County, Texas.  The name Bexar itself has an interesting history.  What is now the city of San Antonio was settled by a small band of Spanish soldiers in 1718.  The original name of that settlement was San Fernando de Béjar.

Béjar was (and is) a city in Salamanca, Spain which housed one of the prominent ruling families of that time.  Over time, and through the unique languages (from Apache and Comanche Indian, Spanish and finally English) of the dominant residents over the years, the name came to be written as “Bexar”, though phonetically it is pronounced “bear”.
